Hiring a developer abroad: how to do it safely

Hiring a developer in another country is safe if you control four things: everything gets registered in your name, the scope and price exist in writing before work starts, you see progress at a real link during the build, and payments are tied to delivery, not to promises. Those four controls neutralize almost every horror story, and none of them requires legal muscle or technical knowledge. I work from Argentina for clients abroad, so this article is me describing the checks I invite my own clients to run on me.

Control 1: ownership sits with you from day zero

The domain, the hosting, the analytics, the payment accounts: registered to your email, your recovery methods, your card. The developer works as an invited collaborator you can revoke. This single arrangement converts the worst-case scenario from “my website is hostage in another country” to “I revoke one access and invite someone else”. I keep a whole article on this because it is the control people skip most.

Code ownership belongs in writing too: one line in the agreement saying delivered work belongs to you upon payment.

Control 2: scope, price and date in writing

The document does not need to be legal poetry. It needs the fixed price, the delivery date, the list of what is included, and what is billed apart. Vagueness is where remote projects rot: “a website with about 6 pages” becomes a 14-page argument nobody can win, in two timezones. Control 3: progress you can see, not hear about

“Going great, almost done” is not a status report. From early in the build you should be looking at the actual work at a real link on your phone, weekly at minimum. This is the control that catches problems while they are cheap, and it doubles as your communication test: response times during the build predict response times after launch.

Timezone matters more than distance here. A developer 11 hours away answers everything tomorrow; from Argentina, my working day overlaps the US day almost completely, so a question at 10am gets an answer at 10:15, not at midnight.

Control 4: payments follow deliveries

The standard healthy structure: a portion up front (half is common on small projects), the rest at delivery, through a traceable channel like PayPal or a wire, never crypto to a stranger or “full payment to reserve the slot”. Tied to control 3, your money is never far ahead of work you have personally seen. On my projects the prices are public, which makes this control easy to exercise.

What is the realistic worst case, and how do these controls cap it?

Realistic worst case: the developer vanishes mid-project. With ownership in your name, visible progress and staged payments, you lose part of one payment and some weeks, not your domain, your site or your data. Uncapped, that same story costs businesses their whole web presence.

Do I need a lawyer or a formal contract?

For a USD 400 to 2,500 project, a clear written agreement (email counts) covering price, date, scope and ownership does the practical work. Weight the enforcement you actually have: the controls above protect you better than a contract you would never litigate across borders.

How do I evaluate someone I cannot meet?

Live projects you can visit and message response speed. Ask for links to real running work, not screenshots, and notice how they answer questions during the quote: that is the working relationship in preview.

Is the language barrier a real risk?
