Local SEO: showing up when people search nearby

Local SEO is the work of appearing when someone nearby searches for what you do, like “plumber near me” or “dentist in Austin”. It runs on two engines: your Google Business Profile (the map listing) and location focused pages on your website. Done right, it is the highest return SEO there is for a physical or service area business, and it costs far less than general SEO: my audit starts at USD 150 and monthly work runs USD 100 to 200.

Why local searches are different

When Google detects local intent, it shows the map pack first: three businesses with reviews, hours and a call button. Most clicks and calls go there, above the regular results. Ranking in that pack depends on three factors: proximity to the searcher, relevance of your profile, and prominence (reviews and mentions). You cannot move your address, but the other two are fully workable.

These searchers are also the closest to buying. Someone searching “emergency locksmith downtown” is not researching, they are hiring in the next ten minutes.

The two engines, in order

1. Google Business Profile. Free, and most businesses waste it. A complete profile needs: exact categories, services listed one by one, real photos, hours kept current, weekly posts, and above all reviews with owner replies. Consistency matters too: your name, address and phone must match exactly everywhere they appear online.

2. Location pages on your site. The profile gets you in the map, the website confirms relevance and captures everyone who scrolls past it. A service area business needs a page per city or neighborhood it serves, each with unique content, not the same paragraph with the city name swapped. This is where most competitors are lazy, so it is where you win.

A USD 400 presence site with well built local pages beats a USD 5,000 site with a generic “Contact us” page for these searches. See my pricing for what each tier includes.

What a local SEO engagement looks like

Month 1: audit of profile, citations and site, then fixes. Months 2 to 3: location pages published, review generation flow set up (usually a QR code or an automated message after each job). From month 3: rankings in the map pack start moving, and you track calls and direction requests directly in the profile dashboard. The timeline logic is the same as general SEO, which I explain in what is SEO and how long until it actually works.

Reviews deserve their own sentence: they are the strongest lever you control. A steady flow of 2 to 4 reviews per month outranks a competitor with 50 old ones.

Frequently asked questions

I have no physical storefront. Does local SEO apply?

Yes. Google supports service area businesses: you hide the address and define the zones you serve. Plumbers, cleaners, photographers and consultants all rank in the map pack this way.

How fast does local SEO work compared to normal SEO?

Faster. Profile improvements can move map rankings within weeks because the competition is thinner, usually a handful of local businesses instead of the whole internet.

Can I just buy reviews?

No. Google filters suspicious review patterns and can suspend profiles. An automated request sent to every real customer after the job gets you a steady legitimate flow, and I can build that into your site or WhatsApp flow.

Do I need a new website for this?

Not always. If your current site is sound, I add location pages and fix the technical layer. If it is unsalvageable, a presence site is USD 400 in 7 days and pays for itself with a couple of local jobs.
