How to show up in ChatGPT and AI answers (AEO and GEO explained)

To show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, your website needs pages that answer specific questions directly, in the first paragraph, with concrete numbers, on a site that AI crawlers can read. That practice is called AEO (answer engine optimization) or GEO (generative engine optimization). It is not a separate product I sell at a separate price: it is how I build content within normal SEO work, from USD 100 to 200 per month.

AEO and GEO in plain words

Traditional SEO gets you a blue link on Google. AEO and GEO get you quoted inside the answer itself. When someone asks ChatGPT “how much does a website cost”, the assistant composes an answer from pages it trusts. If your page states a clear figure with context, you can be the source it cites. If your page says “it depends, contact us”, you never will.

The two terms overlap almost completely. AEO focuses on answer engines, GEO on generative engines. In practice the checklist is the same.

What AI assistants actually reward

After building this into my own sites and client sites, the pattern is consistent:

  • A direct answer in the first paragraph. Numbers, prices, timeframes. AI models extract the opening and skip the fluff.
  • Question shaped headings. H2 and H3 headings that match how people phrase questions.
  • An FAQ section. Short questions with 2 or 3 sentence answers are the easiest format for a model to lift.
  • Real, dated data. Specific prices and named examples get cited over vague claims.
  • Crawlable pages. If your content only renders with JavaScript or your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, you do not exist to them.

What I do concretely

When I write a page or article, I structure it exactly like the text you are reading: direct answer first, H2 development, FAQ at the end, real prices throughout. I also verify the technical side: sitemap, indexing, and that crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot are not blocked. For the ranking foundation that feeds all of this, see what is SEO and how long until it actually works.

For SOMOS DER, an events production company with more than 150,000 attendees, I built an international site in 5 languages with 544 pages structured this way, and its service pages get picked up for event production queries across markets.

What it costs

Nothing extra if the content is built right from the start. My pricing covers it: an SEO audit from USD 150 tells you where you stand today, and monthly SEO between USD 100 and 200 includes writing content in this format. Compare that with US content agencies charging USD 500 or more per article.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from SEO?

It is an extension, not a replacement. AI engines mostly trust pages that already rank well, so you need the SEO base first. AEO is the layer of formatting and directness on top.

How long until an AI mentions my business?

Similar to SEO: expect 3 to 6 months after publishing well structured content. AI models refresh their sources continuously, but they favor pages with some history and authority.

Can I check if AI already knows my business?

Yes, just ask. Type your service and city into ChatGPT or Perplexity and see who gets recommended. If competitors appear and you do not, their content is answering questions yours is not.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?

For a business site, no. Being quoted by an AI assistant is free distribution to buyers. Blocking GPTBot means surrendering those mentions to competitors.
