Custom website vs Wix: an honest comparison
Wix costs approximately USD 17 to 45 per month, which is USD 600 to 1,600 over three years for a site you rent. A custom website costs USD 400 to 900 with me, once, and you own it. That is the economic core of the comparison, but it is not the whole story: Wix is genuinely the right tool for some people, and pretending otherwise would make everything else I say suspect. Here is the honest version of both sides.
Where Wix genuinely wins
Wix wins on immediacy and independence. You can have something online tonight, without hiring anyone, and edit it yourself forever. If your site is a hobby, a test of an idea, or a page whose look you do not particularly care about, that autonomy is worth real money. Wix also bundles hosting and SSL so there is nothing to assemble.
If that describes you, use Wix and skip the rest of this article without guilt. The comparison changes when the site is supposed to win customers.
Where the platform ceiling appears
Three limits show up as a business grows. Performance: builder sites carry heavy generic code, and slow loading measurably costs conversions and search ranking. Sameness: templates make your plumbing company look like every other plumbing company on the same template, a problem I dig into in template vs custom design. And the walls: the moment you need something the platform does not offer (a calculator, an unusual booking flow, integration with your internal system), the answer is a workaround or a migration.
Migration is the expensive part. You cannot export a Wix site; leaving means rebuilding, so every year on the platform raises the exit cost.
What custom means at USD 400 to 900
A starter website at USD 400 or a full website or web app at USD 900, delivered in 7 days to 3 weeks, designed for your business instead of adapted from a theme: fast, unique, and built around the action you want visitors to take. Domain and hosting are billed separately, at cost, registered in your name, so there is no rent and no landlord. Two revision rounds are included, and updates after launch cost USD 30 to 60 per month in maintenance, or per change if the site rarely moves.
The old argument for builders was that custom cost USD 5,000 and up. At US agency rates that was true. At Argentine rates with US-overlapping hours, the custom option landed inside the first year of a Wix subscription, and the argument quietly died.
The decision in one line
